Refurbishment works at UWL were carried out while keeping the facility operational throughout construction. The project involved demolishing a central building and replacing it with a multi-storey ‘Heartspace’ – a new vibrant hub composed of a library, performance centre and new student facilities, such as a refectory, student services and a rooftop garden. Curtain wall glazing, roof lights and a simple but elegant palette of materials are the key features of the new hub. The muted colours and warm timber cladding are intended to create a neutral, ‘trend-proof’ backdrop, allowing the interior scheme to be varied through the use of colour in the furniture elements.
